MEDIA ALERT: HPD, Houston Area Women’s Center Join Forces to Fight Domestic Violence
At 11 a.m. TOMORROW (Tuesday, Oct. 11), Acting Police Chief Martha I. Montalvo and the Houston Area Women’s Center President and CEO Rebecca White will discuss their joint efforts to combat domestic violence.
The briefing will be held in the Media Briefing Room on the first floor of the HPD Edward A. Thomas Building at 1200 Travis.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and focuses on a crime the Houston Police Department investigates year-round. However, this month, the department tries to bring extra attention to what is all-too-often an underreported crime. Many of the officers in the department’s Special Victims Division are tasked with investigating domestic violence. However, HPD knows it can’t address this serious issue alone, which is why it works throughout the year to educate the public and works closely with survivor support agencies such as the Houston Area Women’s Center.
HPD and the Houston Area Women’s center have partnered to jointly train all 5,200 HPD officers on the Neurobiology of Trauma and how to improve their response to domestic violence and sexual assault victims. This is an unprecedented and unique partnership between the Houston Area Women’s Center and the Houston Police Department
A short segment of a recent training class, featuring HPD Sergeant Melissa Holbrook, Special Victims Division, and Houston Area Women’s Center Lisa Levine, Clinical Director, can be found on the department’s YouTube page at https://youtu.be/KKoRw9SOhA8
