MEDIA ALERT: Citizens to Have a Split Second to Decide When to Shoot/Don’t Shoot
Beginning at 6 p.m. TOMORROW (Thursday, April 20), members of the Houston Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy will participate in the shoot/don’t shoot training simulator.
The class will be held at the L. D. Morrison, Sr. HPD Training Academy at 17000 Aldine Westfield Road.
Participants will first receive preliminary tactical training, and then have the opportunity to put that training to the test in real life situations. The class members will have to make split-second decisions when confronted by individuals who may or may not be armed and/or represent a threat to the participant’s personal safety or the safety of others.
NOTE: Media members wishing to attend may take video of the sessions and interview training officers and participants. However, due to time limitations, they cannot take part in the shoot/don’t shoot scenarios.
The citizens are in the eighth week of an 11-week course in which they learn how HPD officers handle investigations, patrols and dangerous situations.
The Citizens’ Police Academy, in its 28th year (organized in 1989), is designed to give citizens from all walks of life a working knowledge of how HPD operates, and stresses the importance of their involvement in preventing and fighting crime in their neighborhoods.
