HPD Officers to "Pedal for a Cure" for Lukemia

MEDIA ALERT: HPD Officers to “Pedal for a Cure” for Leukemia

Beginning at 9 a.m. TOMORROW (June 25), Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Police Chief Art Acevedo will send off the HPD Bicycle Relay Team to take to the streets, once again raising money to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Approximately 27 officers, together with civilians touched by the often deadly disease, will meet at the Houston Police Officers’ Union, 1602 State Street, for ceremonies at 9 a.m. They will depart at 10 a.m. for Boston, Massachusetts. The 2,200 mile journey will take eight days to complete. Team members will wear at least one “dog tag” featuring the name of the patient or survivor who serves as their inspiration.

Officers will be available for interviews from 7 a.m. to their departure.

This is the 38th year HPD officers have donated their time and determination to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. To date, officers have traveled almost 85,000 miles and raised more than $7 million to help find a cure and improve the quality of life for those battling blood-related cancers.
