HOUSTON HEALTH DEPARTMENT COMPETITION ENCOURAGES YOUNG MUSICIANS TO BECOME HOUSTON PREPAREDNESS ICONS

HOUSTON – Young musicians are invited to showcase their talent at an upcoming Houston Health Department competition. Houston Preparedness Icon offers contestants ages 18-29 the opportunity to win prizes for writing and performing songs that encourage Houstonians to prepare for emergencies.

“We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to reach young people with important information about their health and well-being,” said John Fleming, chief of the Houston Health Department Bureau of Public Health Preparedness. “We think an event like Houston Preparedness Icon is a great way to connect with young people through music and performance.”https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bbc8dea1a49ed98f626812405/_compresseds/5bf281b9-faf9-4582-9a4b-e99eb284a419.jpg

Contestants will perform 2-3 songs, all of which must be original compositions. At least one of the songs must promote an emergency preparedness message such as ways to prepare for hurricanes, how to prevent the flu, the importance of vaccinations, methods to prevent mosquito-borne illness, items needed in an emergency kit, etc.

Contestants may apply for the competition as individuals or groups. Applications will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. on April 25. Participants will be notified about their application status no later than April 29.

To apply, email the name(s) of contestants, ages, phone numbers, number of songs and length of set to php@houstontx.gov (mailto:php@houstontx.gov) with “Houston Preparedness Icon” in the subject line.

The grand prize of the competition is a $250 gift card with $125, $75 and $50 gift cards for three runners up. Prizes are sponsored by City of Houston District J Council Member Mike Laster.

“Knowing what to do to prepare for emergencies can literally mean the difference between life and death,” Council Member Laster said. “That’s why I’m proud to support Houston Preparedness Icon. Contestants will have the chance to convey a serious and important message in a fun, exciting and creative way. It should be an entertaining evening.”

Contestants must sign waivers that permits the Houston Health Department to post their likeness and songs on the department’s current or future social media platforms. Songs must not contain discriminatory, explicit or offensive language.

Houston Preparedness Icon will be held Saturday, May 4 from 7-10 p.m. at the Southwest Multi-Service Center, located at 6400 High Star Drive in Houston. Free tickets can be obtained at www.eventbrite.com/e/houston-preparedness-icon-tickets-60277493606.
